Step 1: print at the right size

Paper sizers only work if the page prints at actual size. In the print dialog choose “Actual size”, “100%” or “No scaling” rather than “Fit to page”, then measure the 50 mm test bar with a ruler. If it is not exactly 50 mm, check your printer settings and print again. The calculator above can correct a belt reading for a small scaling error, but reprinting is more reliable. Printing on thicker paper or card makes the belt easier to handle.

Step 2: measure with the sizer belt

  1. Cut out one strip carefully along the dashed outline, and cut the small slot.
  2. Wrap the strip around the base of the finger with the numbers facing out.
  3. Thread the pointed end through the slot.
  4. Pull until it is snug but can still slide over the knuckle.
  5. Read the number at the edge of the slot — that is the US size. If it falls between marks, the short ticks are half sizes.
  6. Measure three times at different times of day and use the most common result.

Step 3: or check a ring you already own

If you have a ring that fits the intended finger, place it on the size circles page and find the circle whose outer edge lines up with the inside edge of the ring. If it sits between two circles, choose the larger. This is the best method for buying a surprise ring, because you can borrow a ring briefly without the wearer knowing.

How accurate is a printable sizer?

A carefully printed and cut paper sizer is usually accurate to within about half a size. Errors come from printing at the wrong scale, cutting off the line, paper stretching, or pulling the strip too tight. Fingers also change size through the day and with temperature, so measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest, and not when you are cold. For an expensive ring or a band wider than about 6 mm, confirm the size with a jeweller.

Wide bands, knuckles and comfort fit

Worked example

Someone prints the kit, measures the test bar at 49.5 mm and reads US 7 on the belt. Entering 49.5 and 7 in the calculator corrects for the 1% under-scale print: the true circumference is about 55 mm, a US 7¼ — UK N½, EU 55. They reprint at 100%, measure again, get 7 twice and 7½ once, and order a 7¼, checking the shop’s resizing policy.

Formats

PDF sizer pages (print at 100% on US Letter or A4), a conversion chart in PDF and Excel, and a gift sizing worksheet in Word and PDF. AI-assisted: the text was drafted with AI help; the sizer geometry was generated by script from the standard US ring size formula and checked before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a printable ring sizer?

Print at 100%, cut out the belt, wrap it around your finger, thread it through the slot and read the size.

Why is my printed ring sizer wrong?

Usually because it was printed with “Fit to page”. Check the 50 mm test bar and reprint at actual size.

Can I measure with a ring I already own?

Yes, lay it on the size circles and match the inside edge.

Should I size up for a wide band?

Often by a quarter to a half size.

When is the best time to measure?

Later in the day when fingers are warm, measured a few times.

What sizes are included?

US 3 to 13 in half sizes, with UK, EU and Japanese equivalents.
